Two weeks ago, I had the joy of facilitating Galvanize USA in their annual all staff retreat. It was such a gift to witness their team build their skills in increasing trust, empowerment, and authorization at all levels of their organization. They spent time learning how to apply August Public's Agile and Empowered Decision Making practices to advance their meaningful mission supporting women to use their civic power to create an America that works for everyone. Super proud to announce August Public is officially a Certified Women-Owned Business! August works differently than most businesses. And we’re really proud of it.
We’ve been employee owned and operated since day 1 – distributing real shares to the people who have helped grow this business. Over the last 8 years, 70% of August’s ownership has been held by women and people of color.
And yet, we have spent the better part of that time jumping through bureaucratic hoops to become officially certified as a minority/women-owned business. The systems aren’t yet setup for businesses as radical as ours. And we were faced more than once with having to choose our commitment to our values over the opportunity generated by M/WBE certification.
Which is why, today’s accomplishment feels even more meaningful after working on this project since early 2022. This in addition to our B-Corp status really reflects our values, and I'm so proud to be a part of the August team!
