Hey solopreneur, are you having fun with your marketing? No? Let's change that.

"Play" is my word of the year. Here are a few ways I'm bringing more play into my marketing in 2024 (and you can, too):

  1. Approach your marketing like it's a creative outlet—not an obligation.

Brainstorm content ideas by asking questions that start with "what if I..." instead of "what should I."

  1. Surprise and delight.

You know what everyone loves? Snail mail. Video messaging or just-because freebies are fun, too. Anything that screams, "This made me think of you."

  1. Get more face-to-face interactions with your audience.

Forget polished webinar presentations (unless you love them). Go lofi. Host a virtual coffee chat, coworking session, or hot seat. Treat people like people, not leads.

  1. This one seems obvious, but stop doing things you hate.

Resent the platform or the process? Change the format, not the effort. Zoom out and consider alternatives. LinkedIn (or Instagram) and downloadable freebies are not the only way.

  1. Make a game out of the creative process.

Try to say what you want to say in as few words as possible. Use a ridiculous analogy. Look at your life as source material for inspiration for a good story.

  1. If you're going to try hard, try hard to have a good time.

Forget about doing it perfectly. If you're having fun with your marketing, your audience will eat it up.

This is my goal going in to 2024, because the bottom line is, you can't force compelling content, no matter how many people tell you effective marketing boils down to "consistency,” content pillars, or a well oiled funnel.

I mean, sure, we like those things—but it goes deeper than that. (Because if marketing feels like a slog right now, a drip campaign isn’t going to fix your problems.)

Tapping into your playful side makes you a more creative marketer and flexible CEO. It’s also one surefire way to discover your brand’s secret ingredient for more potent messaging.

That’s what makes marketing fun as hell. And that’s what makes your brand alluring as hell.

If you want to give back, don’t wait until you’ve reached some imaginary level of success in your business to do it.

$1200 is chump change compared to what larger companies are able to give. But it’s also a higher percentage of profits than what many large companies DO give. And I’m aiming even higher next year.

If you’ve worked with Mettle & Tonic this year or even came to a Copy Hot Seat event, you’ve helped support nonprofits like Center for Reproductive Rights, Maui Food Bank, and UNICEF, because Mettle & Tonic believes in:

💪 Protecting reproductive rights 💪 Ending gun violence 💪 Supporting LGBTQ+ rights 💪 Saving green spaces 💪 Providing children with basic needs and comfort

(Among many other worthy causes.)

Cheers to all the small business owners out there with big hearts. 🥂
