Today, May 22, our family celebrates the 45th anniversary of my dad’s election as Canada’s youngest and only Alberta born Prime Minister.

People sometimes focus on the length of his time as Prime Minister but not on what was achieved in that time. He was, amongst other things, the Prime Minister who opened the doors to almost 60,000 Vietnamese “boat people” fleeing persecution and death, the Prime Minister who approved his foreign minister Flora MacDonald authorizing Canadian passports for American hostages so that they could safely escape Iran. And to that point, he was the Prime Minister who appointed Flora MacDonald in the first place – the country’s first female Foreign Minister. And Lincoln Alexander, the country’s first Black federal cabinet minister.

And this doesn’t even cover some of the incredibly progressive policy decisions at a very volatile time in history. He is a man of bravery and conviction, and that has been born out across his entire political career, when he could have made easy choices, and chose to make the right choices instead, even at personal cost.

Tonight in Ottawa, just before his 85th birthday on June 5th – and on the exact anniversary of his win - I am so proud to have the chance to sit down with my dad to interview him on stage at a gala in his honour hosted by the The Pearson Centre / Le centre Pearson. He will be surrounded by his friends, family, acquaintances, former colleagues and many admirers – a veritable community of communities - gathering to salute him for his dedication to a truly wonderful country which he has loved and served for decades.
