Highlights
I was lucky enough to spend a week in North Cornwall over October half term (blatantly using picture to grab attention 😎 ). While I was there, I was really struck by how clean and tidy all the beaches were. It didn’t take me long to figure out why.
Locals had simply but cleverly harnessed the power of COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY; politely encouraging everyone who visited one of their beautiful beaches to pick up one piece of rubbish and dispose of it responsibly. And it was working; kids and grown-ups (even some dogs 🐕 ) were getting involved in preserving the place they loved.
- Why am I sharing this? (aside from it clearly being a great initiative 👍 )
As agency-side researchers, it’s easy to feel under pressure to produce 'the silver bullet', a previously undiscovered insight that can magically explain and answer everything.
But as former client-side insighters, we at Insight Sherpas know that the answer, the insight, is not always that shiny, sexy or new. Sometimes it's as simple yet powerful as Collective Responsibility.
I can explain...
We Sherpas have spent the past few weeks immersed in fieldwork for a variety of retail clients, our primary brief being to review the effectiveness of a number of in-store trials. But, as so often tends to happen, the action taking place ‘just off camera’ was the most revealing.
We observed that one of the most critical enablers of success was STAFF HAVING A STRONG SENSE OF COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY;
• Looking after the store environment was everyone’s responsibility – not just the person allocated to the trial area. • Helping customers navigate the new space was everyone’s responsibility – not just the trial ambassador’s (or POS!) • Ensuring part time and weekend staff knew about the trial was everyone’s responsibility - not just the store managers
Maybe simple is the new sexy?
With so many retailers continuing to ask customers to self-serve, interesting to read that Booths plan to put staff back on the tills.
