On January 11th, I had the good fortune to be invited to attend the green carpet premiere of the documentary "Common Ground" at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Common Ground is a cinematic masterpiece that combines breathtaking photography, a kick-ass soundtrack, humor, real-time field data, economic and political analysis - and yes, a little celebrity - to tell the story of how #regenerativefarming creates timely solutions to the multiple crises we face with commercial, chemical-dependent #livestock and #agricultural farming practices - that degrade our soil and poison our global food supply.
In addition to eliminating toxic synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers that poison the land, water, and air, as well as the plants and animals we eat, regenerative farming prevents the destruction of the soil's microbiology that is essential to the health of the planet's #biodiversity and the human microbiome. Perhaps even more remarkable is that implementing these historically #indigenousfarming techniques effectively captures carbon from the atmosphere and locks it in the soil, making the ground more nutrient-dense, productive, and cost-effective for farmers. #Carboncapture based on ecological principles and processes.
With aerial views of Gabe Brown's (farmer in the red cape) lush regenerative farm butting up against the infertile and barren land of his neighbor's commercial farm, the physical evidence is undeniable, as is the science and economics underpinning the transformation of his commercial farm to a more profitable regenerative farm portrayed in the film. Regenerative farming is a low-tech, cost-effective solution to the myriad problems created by status-quo commercial farming and climate-driven ecological disasters (see Alejandro Carrillo's Regenerative Ranching in the Desert).
Finally, Common Ground exposes how #petrochemical and other corporations producing agrochemicals and GMO feedstocks, like corn and soybean, unduly influence Congress, the Farm Bill, and agricultural 'research' throughout the Land-Grant Colleges & Universities, with their lobbying and campaign dollars - adding to the farm subsidies and incentives that effectively keep commercial farmers hooked on their toxic mix of chemical cocktails.
These pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers are hazardous, kill the soil and life within it, cost millions to use, and cause life-threatening diseases - for farmers and consumers alike. Gabe Brown himself has been diagnosed with ALS, likely caused by the very same pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers he now advocates against.
The film is dedicated to him for his courage in transitioning away from commercial farming practices and for demonstrating how regenerative farming creates a more cost-effective and sustainable business model, creating a profit while enhancing ecosystems for future generations.
