I often counsel brands that real, unscripted, from-the-heart stories 💖 are a great way to build trust with an audience. I'm usually talking about brand storytelling films or big external communications pushes. I don't often consider the internal audience alone, but that's the conversation I found myself in this past week when meeting with a local municipality.

I reflected on the challenges larger organizations usually face (creative staffing, distribution, measurement) but I kept coming back to the very purpose of internal communications: building trust and rapport. Especially for those small to medium-sized teams (think 25-50), embracing a more DIY approach to internal video comms can actually be a huge advantage.

I put together a little cheat-sheet to help smaller orgs start thinking about video for their internal comms efforts.

But I'm not a monster. I'd never advocate for throwing quality out the window altogether. Here are a few tools I recommend to up-level your basic internal comms talking head video.

🎥 Opal Camera: If you are not going to be recording on your iPhone, or a real video camera, I love this great little webcam. It’s not always great when you want to connect to Zoom or Microsoft Teams, but if you are recording direct to your computer, this is the tool I like.

📨 Vimeo: one of the best distribution platforms outside of YouTube also incorporates a huge number of tools for the DIY video creator including text-based editing. There are extensive privacy controls on Vimeo videos which make it great for potentially sensitive internal communications.

📨 HubSpot: If your org is already a subscriber, the platform has been rolling out a series of improvements to make video more trackable and built more seamlessly into email and other content.

🎬 Descript or VEED.IO: If you already have a way to distribute your video, these two services offer a nice alternative. They both have text-based editing features, can add captions and offer some of the best social reformatting capabilities I’ve come across in the market. I point out these two in particular because they both have one incredibly useful tool for people who are not used to being on camera: a feature called eyeline redirect. (I’ll do a whole other post on this).
