We recently held an event at The Gorky with One Mag LLC, a publication dedicated to telling the stories of ethical practices within fashion production, to celebrate the launch of their Issue No. 19: "Transitioning Towards a Greener and More Inclusive Future." It's a beautifully produced book that makes you want to join everyone featured within its pages in a pursuit of a more sustainable lifestyle. And isn't that the point?
Jing Daily, which I read religiously, posted recently an article that highlights the differences between "east vs. west." Having worked extensively in both markets, it always irks me when it becomes a "versus" situation, as in—it works this way in the west and another way in the east. Pollution from the fashion industry hits much closer to home for the Chinese—it's literally in their water, soil, and air and yet what speaks to them is something much more nuanced and less in their faces. There's too much greenwashing and green-shaming in fashion and in beauty, imho. ICICLE's approach is not new—it's authentic, it's heartfelt, and its values are imbued into everything they do. I believe the goal is to one day not even have to mention that something is "eco-friendly" and it's immediately implied from a common understanding of what is good for humanity. Wishful thinking, I know.
But the one thing I do find heartening is that sustainable living is becoming more important to young consumers all over the world, and that is a very good thing.

“Hopefully this will influence a new form of capitalism that doesn’t end up with a few rich people and a bunch of poor people.” —Yvon Chouinard.
A number of years ago I read Chouinard's 'Let My People Go Surfing,' which without a doubt had influence on my decision to leave Esprit and dig deep into my long, career and life-spanning relationship with the fashion and apparel industry and subsequently, founding of The Gorky. At times I wondered where Esprit would have been if Doug Tompkins, founder and visionary much in the vein of Chouinard's own philosophy, still helmed the company. All of that to say, this unerring convinction to one's true north is the ultimately what you become known for, admired, reverred, followed. Regardless of whether or not Patagonia can stay profitable and tackle climate change at the same time, the ambition has propelled them to angelic status as far as brands go.
