At a time when astronomy was considered a boys club (of whom were convinced that the sun & other stars were of similar composition & matter to earth), Cecelia Payne-Gaposchki's doctorate thesis exhibited that while the sun had the same elements present, it was largely composed of hydrogen & helium gas. Henry Russell, a respected astronomer at the time, told her it was "impossible". Except she wasn't!

Her glory didn't end there! In 1925 she became the first person to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College. In 1938 she was given the title of Astronomer. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1943. Thirteen years later, in 1956 she became the first woman to be promoted to full professor from within the faculty at Harvard's Faculty of Arts & Sciences. Later, with her appointment to the Chair of the Department of Astronomy, she also became the first woman to head a department at Harvard. She retired from active teaching in 1966 & was appointed Emeritus Professor of Harvard. She continued her research as a member of staff at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory & edited the journals & books published by Harvard Observatory for 20 years. She is, our February Woman of Courage!
