Highlights
I’m thrilled to share that our latest work on AQUA (Automated Quality Assurance) has been published in International Clinical Trials! This paper, co-authored with Prof John Harrison, explores how AQUA ensures that clinical assessments are administered and scored with the highest quality standards.
In clinical research, data integrity is paramount. AQUA leverages cutting-edge AI and NLP tools to standardize and improve the reliability of clinical assessments across sites and evaluators. This not only enhances the precision of the data but also expedites the overall research process, ensuring that findings are robust and actionable.
A big thanks to whole team involved in making AQUA a reality! I'm excited to see its growth.

Back in 2022, my team at Winterlight Labs and Cambridge Cognition started working on Automated Quality Assurance (AQUA) for clinical trials.
The idea was simple: There aren't enough highly trained raters. Trials in Alzheimer's disease use complex instruments and without experts to administer them, trials can be delayed and data reliability can be impacted.
Clinicians require years if not decades of practice with the CDR and ADAS-Cog to fine-tune their clinical judgment. Junior raters are trained at the outset of the trial, but do they get the consistent feedback they need throughout the trial to stay aligned with their training?
The sponsors we spoke to didn't think so.
So what can we do?
Two years ago, we imagined a world where raters get immediate, real-time feedback as they're administering assessments. They get real-time feedback on administration, scoring, and tips based on feedback from real experts. That's where we see speech analysis, with AI and NLP, going in the very near future.
Now, let me be clear. The clinical judgment of experts will always be critical.
But for raters early in their training, we see consistency at scale as a massive step in the right direction. Especially when subjective instruments are used as endpoints in trials.
If you're as excited about this future as we are, reach out to learn more about how we're using speech analysis to support endpoint quality in AD trials today.
