Operations teams don't often score high marks for effective communication.

Getting the work done is seen as more valuable than telling people what you're going to do or why you're doing it.

That's why my journalism skills are so important to me and the work I do leading day-to-day operations.

As a former journalist turned operations leader, strong communication skills are not just beneficial -- they're indispensable.

Here's why:

  1. Clarity and Transparency: Just as a well-crafted news story communicates complex information in a clear and concise manner, effective communication in operations ensures understanding, clarity and transparency. This brings impacted teams into the conversation and empowers them to understand goals, processes, and expectations, fostering alignment and support.

  2. Data Interpretation: Journalists excel in gathering, analyzing, and presenting information. Similarly, in operations, communication skills are essential for interpreting data, extracting insights, and making informed decisions that drive efficiency and performance.

  3. Change Management: Journalistic instincts are invaluable in navigating emotions. Clear, timely, and accurate communication - prior to or during periods of change - is crucial for managing risks, mitigating disruptions, and maintaining stakeholder trust.

  4. Stakeholder Engagement: Building relationships and engaging stakeholders are core skills of journalists. In operations, effective communication with internal teams, suppliers, customers, and partners strengthens collaboration, fosters innovation, and drives business growth.

  5. Continuous Improvement: Journalists are relentless in seeking the truth and uncovering new angles. Similarly, in operations, effective communication encourages a culture of continuous improvement, feedback loops, and learning from successes and challenges.

I leverage my journalism background every day. Whether crafting compelling narratives, distilling complex information into actionable insights, or managing challenging communications, I believe strong communication skills are at the heart of driving operational success.

Operations doesn't have to be boring and impersonal. Whether you have communications expereince or not, understanding how effective communications can build trust, develop relationships and create success is a game changer.

In the past two weeks I’ve chatted with nearly a dozen journalists all on the same topic.

Reporters, anchors, news directors and producers who are all curious about the same thing…

How to make the jump out of journalism and into a new career.

There is no magic wand and the earlier you start planning, the better you’ll be but at the end of the day, understanding how to talk about your journalism experience is the key to finding that next role.

Like many industries, journalism has its own lingo and journalists are really good at using it when applying for other journalism jobs.

However, when it comes to looking outside the industry, these expert storytellers tend to fall short when telling their own personal story.

Resumes are for highlighting your accomplishments, not for sharing an agenda of your day (which is typically what I see). For a hiring manger, how you accomplish something is more important than what you accomplished.

If you created an award winning report on an important issue to the community, the award is not the resume bullet point.

The collaboration, leadership, creativity, research and review it took to create the report is the bullet point. Knowing how to communicate that on your resume and in interviews is what I talk about with those who reach out.

There are lots of opportunities out there. Set yourself up for success when the right one comes along.
