📌 Cloud-native applications or app-native infrastructure?

Just got my article published on Forbes as an official member of Forbes Technology Council.

I wanted to write down my thoughts about the past, current and the future of the cloud infrastructure as I was wondering what the future looks like, especially that the application is / will be driving the infrastructure.

👉 Cloud native app means that the architecture of the application is 99% the architecture of the cloud infrastructure that will host it (managed services like DB, API gateway, user authentication, serverless). But as we focus more and more on the application layer + how technology is evolving, we'll shift to app-native infrastructure. Which means that the infrastructure will adapt to the application and not the other way around, and the AI is just the beginning.

📌 Azure RBAC scenarios

✅ Building Azure infrastructure at the enterprise level requires setting up RBAC and configuring access to resources the right way. Most of the time, different teams are involved in the setup and granting access. Especially if you are giving access to Active Directory groups and users.

Brainboard.co helps you easily configure, inspect, assign and fine tune access with native AD integration. All of it with Terraform code automatically generated.

🛡️ Here are a few scenarios that depict some of the combinations:

  1. You create a custom RBAC role for an existing user that has custom rights to data factory.

  2. Create a new Active Directory user and give it 2 different permissions: Contributor on the storage account but Reader on the function app.

  3. Give "Service Cluster User" access to an AKS cluster for an existing AD group.

  4. For key vault: You can grant fine-grained access inline (inside the configuration of the key vault) to a specific object id (could be new AD group or user, existing ones, service principle, automation...).

  5. You can create new AD users, groups, refer to existing ones, use AD application with service principal...all with Terraform code generated and ready to be deployed.

🔐 This will also help you separate the environments and their specific accesses: dev, staging, qa, prod...

Everyone understands which RBAC is associated to which resource as you have the cloud resources, their RBAC and Terraform code in one place mapping out all the details. Both security and cloud team will be happy.
