It is interesting to be in a job search during this unprecedented time in history. When I hear and read reports about how US employers added 206,000 jobs in June and that it is a sign of economic strength, it makes me want to dig deeper into the types of jobs being added.
The jobs being added are mostly government, some construction and healthcare. Professional and Business Services are not adding jobs at a significant rate. Additionally, many are underemployed and working side hustles to make ends literally just meet.
Whenever I see nearly every recruiter on LI looking for a role, the economy is generally not good. This current economy reminds me of the early 2000's. Many of my colleagues pivoted out of recruiting and it looks like the same thing is happening now to some degree.
When the cost of a $5lb bag of shredded cheese at Walmart in Dallas is $17, the economy is not good. I realize on this platform, I am preaching to the choir. I just wish those reporting the news would at least acknowledge our pain and stop treating us like Eddie Murphy's Uncle Gus when he set Charlie on fire. Roll Charlie around, he'll be fine. We are on fire and everyone is telling us just roll around and we will be fine.
We are not fine out here. Are we going to keep trying to find gainful employment? Of course we are. We are strong. Does it get tough? Yep! Does it get depressing? Definitely! However, we will continue to rely on community, friends, family and faith.
