Unlocking Success: How Meituan's Strategic Brilliance Triumphed Over Sector Incumbents, Over and Over Again

In the fast-paced world of startups, being a first mover often seems like the golden ticket to success. However, Meituan, over the past decade, has charted a different course, consistently outperforming by entering the scene later: 🔥 In group-buying, Meituan triumphed over well-funded rivals like Wowo Tuan, Baidu-backed Nuomi, and established player Dianping. 🚀 In food delivery, Meituan seized the largest market share despite facing Alibaba-supported Ele.me and Baidu's Baidu Waimai. 🌍 In online travel, even entering a decade after Ctrip, Meituan swiftly became China's leading online travel platform. What's intriguing is that Meituan often operated with fewer resources than its rivals, yet it consistently emerged victorious. The secret? Meituan never engaged directly in its competitors' core areas but always struck from their 'unexpected weaknesses.' This strategic finesse is now synonymous with Meituan.

Let's delve into two standout examples: 🍔 Food Delivery: Back in 2013, when Meituan entered the food delivery game, Ele.me had a four-year head start and controlled major cities. Why focus on large cities? They housed college students and busy professionals craving convenience. Yet Meituan saw a broader market and tested 20 cities, including obscure ones. The results were impressive. In 2014, Meituan recruited thousands of graduates, trained them, and deployed them to open 100 cities, many overlooked by Ele.me. When Ele.me played catch-up, Meituan had already established dominance. 🏨 Hotel Bookings: Meituan employed a similar tactic in the hotel booking sector dominated by Ctrip and Qunar, who focused on star-rated hotels. Meituan, however, explored budget hotels and hourly accommodations. They began with group-buying, but user experience suffered. Extensive market research revealed a market for budget hotels and hourly stays. Meituan honed in on this niche, accumulating supply options and fostering user habits. Today, Meituan's hotel booking outnumbered No2 and No3 combined. Food delivery and hotel bookings are now Meituan's twin pillars, both challenging industry leaders with a strategy of sidestepping direct competition and launching attacks from the overlooked areas by predecessors.

Spotting overlooked opportunities isn't rocket science. First movers often secure prime opportunities but miss nuances. Latecomers must invest more in information gathering and experimentation. Meituan, for example, has a department monitoring all orders, enabling them to spot the food delivery market opportunity. Their open-minded approach, willingness to test, and execution have been key to their success.
