Did you know that passenger cars account for ~9% of global CO2 emissions? It's even higher in western countries: ~16% in France, ~17% in the US.

How can we curb these emissions? I think we have 2 main levers:

  1. Decreasing the total distance driven by cars This can be done by building transportation systems that cover the largest possible share of use cases with means of transport that are cleaner than passenger cars: bikes, trains, subways, buses. For certain use cases, there won't be an easy alternative to the passenger car, though. At Getaround we believe that car sharing is the best solution to address these remaining use cases.

  2. Driving cleaner cars There are many aspects at play here, but to simplify:

  • Choose the smallest car possible for your need. Driving an SUV with 4 empty seats is just absurd.
  • Electric cars are generally cleaner than cars with internal combustion engines, but their 'level' of cleanliness depends on on their total mileage (because a larger share of emissions happen in the manufacturing of the car) and on the power generation mix. For example, if you consider an electric car that will drive only 50 000 km in a country that relies heavily on coal for power — such a car isn't that clean.

If you're interested in this problem or if you want to learn more about the benefits of car sharing, check the short video about Getaround's vision and mission in the 1st comment below.
