🇺🇸 Happy Veterans Day! 🇺🇸
Reflecting on my incredible journey from a young enlistee to a proud graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and a combat veteran, I am profoundly grateful for the transformative power of service. At the age of 17, after barely graduating high school and convincing a judge to release me from probation, I enlisted in the US Army to carve a path toward a brighter future. It wasn't an exact "join the Army or go to jail" situation, but it came pretty close. I was no patriot, but that changed when I discovered my tribe—a community that fueled my inspiration to "Be All You Can Be."
Driven by a commitment to personal growth and a desire to prove wrong all the naysayers who predicted my failure, demise, or incarceration, I attended as many Army schools as possible—Air Assault, Airborne, Pathfinder, Military Free Fall, Ranger, Sapper, Special Forces Assessment and Selection. Each achievement and the associated piece of "flare" meant more than personal success; they symbolized a dedication to continuous improvement and a persistent desire to knock the chip—the lingering feelings of failure from my youth—off my shoulder.
The challenges of Ranger School (Class 06-02), pictured below, came before my time at West Point, making the military and physical demands of the academy feel comparatively manageable. With determination, I graduated second in my class, earning the Marshall and Truman Scholarships. I even had the honor of parachuting with the game ball into our football games.
My journey continued with a master's degree from King's College London, followed by a deployment with the 82nd Airborne, where I led an airborne rifle platoon in Ramadi. Later, I served as an Aide de Camp to the Commanding General of a new unit in Afghanistan. Additionally, I built my first company, a 52-person security detachment, from the ground up, in a combat setting.
Now, as a proud member of the Long Gray Line (thanks to Tom Feir)—a network stronger than any other—I am a passionate veteran committed to paying it forward.
It was a tremendous honor to serve, and on this Veterans Day, I extend my deepest gratitude to all my fellow veterans. You've earned this celebration!
