Looking Back at the Recent Past and the Road Ahead

  • Charlie Porritt, CEO, Russound   There is a condition called depersonalization-derealization disorder, which is defined as”...the feeling that you're observing yourself from outside your body or you have a sense that things around you aren't real, or both.”*   I have a feeling there was an epidemic of this sensation in those early months of 2020 as we watched the world change, with our business and personal lives radically altered for what we hoped would be a fleeting moment but instead lasted nearly three years.   Even then, there was cautious optimism expressed by many in audio (myself included) that our business would continue its then-upward momentum. In fact, the pandemic, especially in the first year, was a bit of a boon for the consumer electronics market, audio included.   The logic was simple: people stuck at home are more likely to invest in products and services that fill a void or, in the case of PCs and computer peripherals, help consumers to shift to a work-at-home lifestyle.   It’s easy to see how audio, sometimes viewed as a luxury, suddenly became a necessity for those now spending significantly more time at home.   Jump ahead to the current post-pandemic era and it’s a whole other scenario. The pandemic and related factors led to chip shortages that in turn begat logistical and manufacturing challenges that threaten to derail, or at least hamper the market’s growth.   The management team at Russound saw it as a time to re-tool and re-focus our company to not only adapt to current events, but come out of it even stronger than before. Our status as a long-time independently owned company affords us the luxury of being remarkably nimble at a time when other, bulkier companies found it challenging to pivot and remain on a positive trajectory.   After talking among ourselves and with our dealers, we redesigned software and hardware where needed in order to bypass any extended shortages of necessary materials. We increased staff, and shortened concept-to-market time in order to supply our dealers with the inventory necessary to stay the course during a potential downturn.   Just as important, we are committed to introducing new models that speak to the interests of demanding listeners. New amplifiers and an upcoming selection of a category-first for us are only the beginning of what will be the ongoing development of audio products that appeal not only to traditional custom installation pros, but the higher end of the audio market, only without the higher end pricing.   Ultimately, music matters most. It’s what drove me to the audio business, and what keeps Russound moving and growing as we approach our 57th year in the market. Still privately owned and focused on bringing the best quality audio products to our customers and their clients.
