Glossophobia is a strong fear of public speaking. It affects over 70% of the population. In some people it is so extreme they are selective mutes. (https://lnkd.in/debTKKND) Selective mutism affects less than 1% of the population, but it is serious and needs to be addressed.
"Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language." Voice 21 UK
Speech develops in humans over childhood. By 7 or 8 years of age we should be able to process all the sounds of our language. As the body develops so do sound processing skills. Our inner ear is embedded in our skull, so our skeletal frame and sound processing are linked through bone conduction of sound (Dr A, Tomatis).
Inner ear infection is common in children under 3 years of age and that can impact on the development of sound processing, if not remediated using an effective sound therapy programme. #Tomatis
Sound should move from left to right ear dominant in most humans at about 6 years of age; but this does not always happen. Being left ear dominant creates a microsecond delay on a hearing which impacts on speech. (N.B. 30% of left-hander are naturally left ear dominant). https://lnkd.in/dYW8cHkk
When we are born our voice box is high in our trachea, but as we integrate our primitive reflexes and learn to crawl the voice box should drop down the trachea. Many modern humans do not fully integrate primitive reflexes so their voice box is too high in their throat, this can trigger feelings of anxiety. https://lnkd.in/dNMghXd2
There is a lot of bio-mechanics that needs to be considered before insisting that a person speaks in public.
A lot of damage can be done to a person making them speak publicly when they are not ready. It traumatises them and makes the situation worse.

Mmm my son lost his vision at 6yo having been blinded by my local hospital, this also impacted on his motor skills control and sense of security/anxiety. It took me and Daleen Smith 18months to sort out the mess. He left school with top grades. Department for Education Nuffield Foundation Lee Elliot-Major OBE Pepe DiIasio Esme Lillywhite
I learnt a lot on my journey. During lockdown I put videos on Youtube telling people how to support children to good development. https://lnkd.in/dYei_WnG
But the UK is obsessed by celebrity and instant results; and women of a certain age are invisible.
I still know that in order to learn efficiently all children need to have:
- Coherent nasal breathing i.e. be oxygenated
- Control of motor skills including integration of primitive reflexes, bi-lateral integration and postural control
- Excellent sound processing skills
- Binocular vision and visual processing skills
- Be able to combine all senses and motor skills in order to tackle any problem.
On-line tutoring is not going to work. Humans are animals and need physical interactions to trigger enough stimulation to trigger neural pathways.
An obsession with higher level learning (numeracy/literacy) is not going to work if the foundation skills are not in place.
If we want to sort out the problems for the mass of the population on a timely basis we need to have an alternative curriculum to support good development in all students. It is not difficult, it just needs a consistent effort.
Let's make our children fit to learn and fit for life. Let's stop trying to do quick fixes to please politicians or to game league tables.
