On Knowing vs Discovering –

These days, almost everything we consume comes with a rating attached.

Let’s say you want to go out for dinner. Before you even step into a restaurant, you have gone through the Google reviews, watched a reel, seen someone talk about the best dishes. Your brain has formed a full opinion before you have even left home.

So when you actually get there, even if something is genuinely great, it just feels expected. You came here because it was a 4.9. The food has to be good. That is already decided.

You experienced it before you experienced it.

But think about that one place you stumbled into with no context. No rating, just you walking in on a whim. Nine times out of ten, it’s nothing special. But that one time it is actually good, the joy is completely different. Almost disproportionate because nobody told you it would be good. You went in without expectations.

I think life works the same way.

The well-reviewed path that is proven to work in some shape or form gives you a predictable return. It’s safe and respectable, it’s fine. But when you take the one with no blueprint and it actually works, it hits differently. This path was not objectively better but felt better because it was entirely yours to discover.

At the end of the day, a thousand reviews can confirm an experience. But they cannot match the joy of finding something yourself.
