Highlights
Before #Juneteenth comes to close, I would be remiss not to acknowledge my mother, Ruby, whose birthday is today. Since I was a child, she and my father have instilled the gravity of this day not simply because it is her birthday, but also because of their deep commitment to elevating our history and carrying the legacy of survival and endurance that runs through our veins as Black Americans.
Over the last decade, my mother has deepened her involvement in our local community of #Harrisburg, PA by not only becoming a known community servant - she has upended the narrative of what it means to be a Black woman who is invested in change.
CURRENTLY, she is serving locally on the Board of the Dauphin County Library System, the Board of the NAACP of Greater Harrisburg, the Board of The COALITION OF BLACK TRADE UNIONISTS, the Executive Board of Directors for the African American Monument (the first Black monument in Harrisburg), and the Board for AFSCME (American Federation of State, County, & Municipal Employees). PREVIOUSLY, she served on the Board of Directors for Gamut Theatre Group for eight years as well as the Board of the NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM.
At the end of July, one of the largest endeavors that she has spearheaded will come to fruition: The renaming of the former Klein Library to the "George and Hettie Love Memorial Library" (https://www.dcls.org/love/) both of whom were late educators that left a profound impact on the Black community in Pennsylvania and were members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated respectively. This project has been years in the making - years in which my mother has balanced transitions in her career, the pandemic, and while also serving as the primary #caregiver for my grandparents who passed 11 days apart in the Spring of 2023.
As a #DEI practitioner who continues to pursue "good trouble", I'm consistently encouraged by my mother's endurance, power, and commitment to change through her contemporary activism. When Ruby walks into a #boardroom, a shift happens and tables turn. And I cannot think of a more quintessential way to epitomize freedom 159 years post Emancipation. Happy Birthday, Mom - you are truly the dream our ancestors imagined 💖
Yesterday, McKinsey published the fourth edition of our Diversity Matters report series, exploring the relationship between leadership diversity and company performance.
This year, the business case for diversity is the strongest it has been since we’ve been tracking and, for the first time in some areas, equitable representation is in sight. The research found that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 39% more likely to outperform peers in the bottom quartile.
