I'm beyond honored to have received the Gorilla Logic Unstoppable Award yesterday! These awards are companywide and only given out twice a year, so I feel incredibly flattered to have even been nominated, let alone win one. Over the past few years, I've made it my personal mission to prove that leading with empathy first and foremost is a trait beneficial to my mentees, peers, employer, and myself--and that compassion and emotion in the workplace are strengths, not weaknesses. Receiving this award feels incredibly validating to that mission.
I must note that I could not have received this without my boss, Cindy O'Keeffe, who has constantly supported me and helped me grow immensely as a leader and manager over the past two years; or without my team: Tatum Pugh, Fernanda Rugama, and Roxana Ruiz Mendez, you teach me so much, are my pillars of strength, and it's a pleasure to work with each of you every day. To Hannah Alston and the many others I collaborate with daily, thank you for being incredible peers who motivate me to be better!
A snippet from the award ceremony: "Chelsea shows deep empathy and a commitment to constructive feedback, while consistently recognizing her team members’ efforts. She’s a supportive mentor and known for using collaborative projects to further her team members’ professional development. Under her leadership, the team has not only persevered but also grown the already strong culture of positivity and continuous improvement."
Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🤗
This one goes out to all the writers and content marketers out there that have, like me, been a little on the apprehensive side about AI! Today I attended the "AI for Writers" Summit, hosted by Marketing AI Institute & Jasper, in hopes of learning a few tips & tricks for the Gorilla Logic marketing team to use as we begin our own AI pilot. The day ended up being more transformative for me than I had expected, so I wanted to share a few thoughts:
On a personal level, I have to admit that I've been wary from the start about the entire idea of using AI for creative work. I've never felt more like a grumpy grandpa than I have this past year as I scrolled past countless posts from "thought leaders" on LinkedIn every day, each talking about how amazing AI will be for publishing more content and how we all HAVE to get STARTED now, now, now! I scoffed at all of it.
In self-defense: As a writer and creative, I think it's only natural that my guard has been up when it comes to AI. I was quick to worry about the implications for my job at large ("Is this thing gonna end up replacing me?"), the ethics of using it during this early Wild West phase, and cringed at the thought of writers being pushed by their companies to pump out AI-written content like factory workers, with little regard for quality or accuracy, all in the name of productivity...
😬 ...Too much? Like I said, the hype has had me worried. However, today's summit was the first event that actually broke through all the AI noise for me.
In fact, a reassuring theme emerged from all the speakers throughout the day: AI should only be a tool to assist the writing process, not to replace us; to be used as an "intern" of sorts, helping take on our most time-consuming grunt work so we can actually do more of the creative thinking and writing we enjoy.
This advice resonated with me: "Start small, experiment thoughtfully, and don’t underestimate the human factor: invest in your people more than the AI tools."
AI in the workplace is inevitable, and there is still a ton of work to be done both to improve the AI tools themselves and for businesses to create AI policies, best practices, etc. And while a few businesses will certainly use it in the exploitative way that many of us writers dread, today also showed me that many companies--the smartest companies--will use AI tools not to replace their writers, but to help make their lives easier, invest in training on these new skill sets, and encourage creativity and thoughtful content. Imagine my relief!
If any fellow content writers are interested in my notes from the event or just want to chat about AI tools/use cases/experiments, my inbox is always open! 🤗 🖋
