Tonight, I find myself reflecting on the irony of servant leadership after President Joe Biden’s historic address to the nation. His decision to “pass the torch to a new generation” and prioritize “saving our democracy” over “personal ambition” exemplifies true statesmanship. In a time of great uncertainty and growing division, this choice underscores what it truly means to lead by serving others rather than by ruling others and serving self. It echos the transition in power that took place among House Democratic leadership this Congress as legacy leaders stepped down to make room for new, fresh perspectives. It is also a poignant reminder that we must all block out the noise from time to time and listen to that quiet voice inside of us, guiding us in the right direction.

Whatever your politics or personal beliefs, President Biden’s 50 plus year legacy as a public servant is emblematic of someone who has constantly put country over self. His unwavering dedication to service and genuine concern for the welfare of all Americans, not just those who agree with him, should inspire us to reflect on our own sphere of influence as we build coalitions and advocate for policies and actions that will enable a better future for tomorrow’s leaders.

💡What are you doing today - in your personal or professional capacity- to build a legacy that lasts beyond tomorrow? 💡How are you exemplifying servant leadership in your own organizations, communities and homes? 💡And as the great Congressman Jim Clyburn has asked on many occasions, are you making headlines or headway?

Thank you, Third Way for hosting last week’s fireside chat with Alexander Laska and Annie P. , Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs, U.S. Department of Transportation; followed by a moderated discussion with Delta Air Lines, one of our key supply chain partners, Lindsay Fitzgerald with Gevo, Inc., and John Hebert. It was fun to discuss the suite of opportunities available to decarbonize our sector with an emphasis on catalyzing the market for #SustainableAviationFuel or #SAF. We have a journey ahead of us to get to net zero but the industry commitment is strong and the call to action is loud and clear!
