Highlights
'Sunny days’, they are our birthright. What does it mean to reclaim this? If not for us, then for our children. ⠀ Imagine you found yourself in a relationship with a partner that is never accountable, not once, not ever. Worse still, they don’t acknowledge their failings or apologize. You probably are neither thriving nor interested in staying on in such a partnership. ⠀ It strikes me that in spite of what our hearts and minds know to be true, we find ourselves in very long-term relationships with governments who are neither accountable or willing to acknowledge wrongdoing, but instead are overwhelmed by their own ego and defending of said self-interests. The result is that we suffer. ⠀ My home country comes to mind, but I really could be speaking about anywhere given the current state of global affairs. ⠀ In this interview, Adesuwa Onyenokwe and I discuss what it means to live a life of change as inspired by the life of Dora Akunyili as shared in my book, ‘I Am Because We Are’ ⠀ Now more than ever, the potential of Nigeria and Nigerians has never been more evident. ⠀ However, the gatekeepers — our leaders — have a critical role to play. Can we hold them accountable? ⠀ Remembering always my mother’s final words, "A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." ⠀ I hope you enjoy some of my reflections on the above and more, and even more so, pick up a copy of ‘I Am Because We Are’ and read for yourself why it has captured the hearts of so many. ⠀ Sincere thanks to Adesuwa Onyenokwe for everything.

Everyday, I read a message from someone who has taken the time to share how profound an experience it’s been for them reading the story of Dora Akunyili. ⠀ A lot of what I hear is about their healing. ⠀ Writing ‘I Am Because We Are’ has left me with the unshakable knowing of the power of stories, and of truth. ⠀ And with it, how important it is making the invisible visible. ⠀ Thank you to BusinessDay especially to Kemi Ajumobi for sharing powerful stories of women. And for sharing this story. ⠀ #IAmBecauseWeAre #DoraAkunyili #BusinessDay#WomensHub
