You rarely hear, "We really hated playing together" in a documentary about a championship sports team.
Instead I consistently hear people talk about the importance of their culture, teamwork, drive, and caring about each other whenever they reminisce about a championship season.
That was the case when I saw a documentary about the The University of Alabama softball team over the weekend.
So, I'm always a little surprised when business people don't think those things are among the most critical at work. Or treat them as nice to haves.
The Jordan-era Chicago Bulls come to mind as a team that had some chemistry issues, but they also had Phil Jackson working everyday to make sure that the team stayed together. And they had Michael Jordan. I think that is a unique situation.
I just wish more leaders thought the way championship winning sports coaches do.
People want to be part of winning teams and there needs to be someone who owns building that esprit de corps because it doesn't just happen by accident. If it's not the CEO's strong suit, that's okay. Just put someone else in charge of building it because it is too important to leave up to chance.

I had the best time catching up with Jesse Frye today. It has been a couple of years since we made time to hop on a call together. I'm so impressed by what he's built with ScaleLegal and the reputation he's built in the legal community.
Everyone knows that the alumni of the Singularity University programs are an amazing group of people. But the employee alumni are just as remarkable!
