Highlights
Saturday was a great day to be Black at Stanford. Many Saturdays ago, we hosted the annual Black Leadership Conference at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, on behalf of the Black Business Students Association.
We honored GSB alum Marla Blow for her achievements with our Tapestry Award. We celebrated Emma Grede with our Innovator Award, for her industry-redefining strides in making inclusivity a core business and product principle in the retail industry. And we recognized James Jeter with our Trailblazer Award.
Ime Archibong and Kofi Amoo-Gottfried taught us that our Black identity is a superpower, while former president and current chairman of the Jordan Brand at Nike Larry Miller and his daughter Laila Lacy showed us the importance of compassion for and inclusion of the formerly incarcerated and historically disenfranchised.
Steve Pamon and Pearlena Igbokwe showed us how to turn challenges into strengths. Actress and founder Tracee Ellis Ross inspired us towards ownership of the wholeness of our identities, and Valerie Jarrett encouraged us to accept the vulnerability in ourselves.
We were also fortunate to have had the privilege of learning from powerhouse leaders in their industries – Mercedes Bent, Daryn Dodson, Charles Hudson, Jason Mayden, Sherri McMullen & Bette Gordon, Kanyi Maqubela, John W. Rogers, Jr., Jeron Smith, Seun Sodipo, Aaron Thomas, Lo Toney, Wemimo Abbey, Christa Williams, Ammanuel Zegeye, and GSB professors Adina (she/her) Sterling and Nir Halevy. And fortunate to have been inspired by our student entrepreneurs – Kimiloluwa F., Izunna O., Jean-Pierre Vertil, Chinedum (CK) Umachi, Tony Douglas, Jr. and Andrew Leon Hanna. We still don’t know how we got so lucky.
One of our favorite overheards of the day: “This is the best dressed conference I’ve seen at Stanford.” (Maybe this was Sherri McMullen's influence.) It was incredibly meaningful to see Black leaders so at ease, so self-possessed and so comfortable expressing the fullness of their identities.
It was an unforgettable honor to share space with these leaders and to be a part of the energy, memories, and care for one another that this day invoked.
As Kofi said, "go where people see you're magic." Join us again this year on Saturday, May 13 for a day of inspiration. You can get your tickets here: https://lnkd.in/eEnYxcUG
With love, Chisom & Meghan
