hey folks, this is a short post about carbon dashboards and embodied carbon from hardware, with a call for help.

I found out a couple of weeks back that Aknostic, are working on some tooling called "Kubernetes Emissions Insights Tool" - KEIT to its friends.

They showed me an early demo that uses the Green Web Foundation open source grid-intensity-go library that Ross Fairbanks and I worked on a while back to create tool for use-phase emissions, but also, Boavizta's own tool for estimating embodied carbon emissions. It's pretty cool - I'll share a link in a comment on this post.

I'm aware that Boavizta, has some fantastic work on embodied emissions of software, and that's been my go-to reference when looking this up, but I earlier this week Facebook / Meta shared this post showing a new approach for tracking the embodied energy of infrastructure in a way designed to incentivise action, which they're calling RETINAS - "Real-Time Infrastructure Accounting for Sustainability"*. Link below:

Their post is fascinating, but I'm looking for some more detailed info, as Meta often accompanies posts like this with academic research. Carbon Explorer from Bilge A. is one such example. Has anyone seen something comparable from that org that would allow you to build dashboard that provide actionable data about embodied carbon in hardware?

I'm not sure I love using LinkedIn - it feels like "Twitter for Millenials"*, but if you have to use it, taking 30 seconds to follow these steps made me less miserable.

  1. From the LinkedIn menu, navigate to: Me > Account: Settings and Privacy > Feed Preferences
  2. Choose "most recent first"
  3. Breathe out. You no longer need to hunt around for this setting on each post, until a new dubious feature changes it back.

It's not at all obvious, but this ALSO sets the default view for seeing comments on a post. So, you now see the whole comment thread, rather than what LinkedIn's algorithm thinks is the most relevant, which is really helpful for understanding the context in some discussions.

  • I'll post context about this in comment on this post
