Highlights
As an athlete growing up, I enjoy using sports analogies to break down financial planning topics.
As we embark on the start of football season, I'm going to share a comparison of two notable NFL quarterbacks & relate this to how I approach investing. 🏈
RG III vs. Tom Brady
Let's start by breaking down their careers.
RG III - Robert Griffin III was the Heisman trophy winner in 2011, after a stellar season for his alma mater, the Baylor Bears. He threw for nearly 4,000 yards & 36 TDs and racked up another 9 scores on the ground. 🥇
RG III turned around a long-struggling Baylor football program to a top 15 national ranking, its best in over 25 years. In addition, he qualified for the Olympics running hurdles & was one of the fastest sprinters in the country.
Following his remarkable season, he declared for the NFL draft & was the 2nd overall pick by the Washington Redskins.
This phenomenal talent was projected to turn around the struggling Redskins franchise & many scouts thought he would go on to have a Hall of Fame NFL career.
Unfortunately, that wasn't how things transpired...
His 2nd year in the NFL, he suffered an ACL-injury and never fully recovered to the level he was playing at in 2011.
Tom Brady - During his college career, Tom threw for fewer touchdowns than RG III racked up in one season!
He was the 199th draft pick in the 2000 NFL draft. Scouts were unimpressed by Tom's physical attributes, as he ran the slowest 40-yard dash by a quarterback in over a decade.
Despite this, Tom Brady managed to put together one of the most respected NFL careers of any quarterback to play the game.
He played 23 seasons in the league & won 7 Super Bowls. 🏆
Today, many refer to Tom Brady as the "GOAT", and say he is a lock to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 🐐
So what do these two quarterbacks have to do with investing? 🤔
As you read above, one of them had one of the best single-season performances of all-time.
He won college football's equivalent of the "MVP" award & all the professional scouts thought his exceptional talent would translate into a remarkable NFL career.
The other guy was deemed to have FAR less talent & potential, yet he managed to prove all the scouts wrong and put together a Hall of Fame career.
He did this by consistently delivering strong results, year in & year out, over the course of more than two decades in the NFL.
When it comes to investing, it's not about picking the top-performing investments of the year.
Rather, building & maintaining wealth is about delivering strong returns consistently over the course of one's life.
So if you've invested in some stocks that have outperformed the S&P 500 this year... Congrats on your winners! 👏
Just remember - an MVP season doesn't translate to a Hall of Fame career. 💡
When it comes to my personal wealth & my clients as well, my goal is to craft an investment strategy that leads to achieving a HOF career.
Over $10k of new business today - my stunning wife, Lainie, booked not just one, but TWO weddings today! 👏
It’s been a joy & privilege to watch her thrive in building her own wedding photography business over the past 3 years.
And I’ve been lucky enough to play a small part in celebrating her couples & capturing their special day.
Tonight, we’re celebrating! 🎉
