Highlights
Most of us know that some news media outlets (you know which) contribute significantly to platforming and amplifying hate speech online - particularly now around the referendum. And an incredible team at Purpose have released one of the best analyses of what this looks like in practice. The four case studies in the report are hard reading (content warning for all - particularly Indigenous Australians, and people from LGBTIQ+, Indian and refugee communities), they detail how outlets use deficit discourse, and platform hateful actors to capitalise on the increased engagement online (both rightful outrage and hateful support).
Many people contributed to this report in various ways, but a special thanks to Rita Jabri Markwell who I greatly respect and said: "this is a timely and powerful investigation that actually breaks down and defines the problem. Terms such as deficit discourse and dehumanising hate speech need to become widely understood by researchers, policymakers and news media practitioners.”
Over the last three years we've built Reset Australia from a humble think tank into an organisation that punches well above its weight. And it's hard to believe that we're levelling up again with the excellent Alice Dawkins joining to take on the role of Executive Director.
There’s no one I’d rather be handing the reins to, to see Reset into this next phase, and continuing our work with policymakers across Parliament to shape how Australia thinks about tech regulation.
