Highlights
Like many in #Seattle, we at Founders Co-op were surprised and saddened to learn today that Techstars has chosen to terminate its flagship Seattle program. The reason they offered for the decision was to focus on "cities with the highest concentration of VC activity and other startups to maximize our impact (SF, NY, Boston, LA)."
As the firm that co-created the Seattle program with Techstars, and as longtime believers in both the Seattle startup ecosystem, and the Techstars community and its values, we wanted to offer our own observations about how we got here, and how it might have gone differently:
10 years ago Founders Co-op and @techstars #Seattle partnered with the University of Washington to create Startup Hall -- a physical location for "Stage 0" commercial innovation on the UW Campus. Today CoMotion at University of Washington -- our UW partner in that first phase -- announced their own relocation into Startup Hall as well.
As the article below hints, this marks the next step in a long-term transformation of the southwestern UW campus into a dense, walkable mixed-use neighborhood that will integrate housing, commercial space of all kinds and UW academic and research facilities -- the Portage Bay Crossing neighborhood.
Transforming cities and neighborhoods for livability and economic vitality takes decades of sustained commitment from many players, but the long-term benefits to the City of Seattle are well worth the investment. Watch this space -- and be a little bit patient -- to see the process unfold.
