Highlights
I've talked to hundreds of business leaders over 6 years about where they see identity heading...And a pattern has begun to emerge.
Want to get up to speed?👇
First, we need to outline the main elements of identity (non-exhaustive):
-
Who you are - name, DOB, demographics, biometrics
-
What you do - pay your taxes, Twitter/Discord poster, gamer, blogger, frequent flyer, shop, browse online
-
What you have - SSN, phone number, handle (TikTok/Insta), email address, NFT, gaming avatar, crypto wallet
These elements of your identity can be mixed and matched within 3 main patterns:
1/ Anonymous? - browse online (w/ VPN or limited cookies only) / crypto wallet / NFTs
2/ Pseudonymous (or partial disclosure) - NFT buyer / gaming avatar / discord user / Twitter poster (identity may be known to the platform but not the users)
3/ Full or Partial ID Disclosure - tax payments / log in online / LinkedIn profile
And these patterns are generally used in 3 main structures:
1/ Regulated - financial transactions, age gated products, voting
2/ Private Requirements - e.g. for trust & safety - unregulated but focused on fraud reduction, security and the like
3/ Unregulated & Open - hmm, there isn't much in this bucket. Maybe sitting in a meadow, a remote meadow, no phone... I'm not including fake accounts which can be used to game systems here.
So, what's the pattern?
It goes something like this:
Q: Should people be entitled to privacy? A: Yes of course!
Q: Should people be entitled to privacy in the case of your business? A: Well, we are regulated, so no dice. [OR] We have privacy structures here - BY us, just not FROM us...
Q: What about your own privacy expectations? A: I should be able to control who knows what about me 100%, that's my right!
Takeaways:
-
While few would suggest a total free-for-all, the pace with which private data is becoming public data is alarming to most business owners. AI will accelerate this trend.
-
There is quite a bit of innovative thinking about structures like Self Sovereign Identity, but not yet any widely adopted and practical solutions.
-
We have a long way to go, but this is too important to get wrong!
