Lucky me

On International women’s day I got to visit great OXFAM programming in Tajikistan on the border of Afghanistan.

This exemplar Economic Justice programme takes a light and systematic service user-driven approach. It co-produces with local authorities and businesses. Accessible with connected savings, agronomy and now collection, grading and marketing services within a local hub. Run voluntarily by local producers, mobilisers and CBO reps.

The programme has producer collectives at village level and builds supporting and democratic governance structures. Connectedness is prioritised at village and district level.

A year on the groups of women producers were bursting with enthusiasm. They cited increased discretionary income, learning and decision making, saying “for the first time we feel free”. Men and young people spoke of benefits for them, their families and villages.

Village CBO leaders were thrilled that they were discussing, deciding on and taking development action for social and economic benefit.

Driven bottom up with top down synergy and Wash and Gender components adding value. Slick learning capture quickly influences practice and policy - including a successful land certificate lobby.

A lovely gift to celebrate and scale.

What will happen to me?

In a BBC news item on the families fleeing the final battle with ISIS in Baghuz, Syria, they interview some of the children and families at the makeshift al-Hol refugee camp. As these injured ISIL fighters and their families, and others remaining spoke, this for me summarised some of the most complex issues of war.

Most tragic for me was a brief discussion with Hamza, a 12 year old whose whole family had been killed and who lost both of his legs to a land mine. He has been isolated in his own small shelter and is interviewed seated on blankets on the floor. At the end of the interview, in which he puts on the brave face of a child in such circumstances, he half smiles (concern in his eyes) and says “ what will happen to me”? The interviewer falls silent, and I wept.

Hamza is not the only one suffering but he needs help and a lot of love

  • and quickly. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the situation, it is not his fault. He will need psychological rehabilitation, a family to look after him and funding and medical care for new legs. Above all he will need to be loved and valued.

There are great organisations out there but this camp is isolated and he is scared. With these organisations and our networks, contacts and abilities, can we help Hamza?
