Fortune cookie inspiration of the day…

You may have a few hard steps in front of you.

You might be exhausted.

Feeling like every step is harder than the last.

But relief is around the corner.

The payoff is coming.

And when you get to the top, you’ll have a choice:

Plateau, or seek out the next path upward.

The advice I’ve gotten climbing every mountain (including this one this morning) is simple. One step at a time, but don’t stop moving.

It’s a mantra a repeat often, maybe it resonates with you too.

Have a great weekend!

A nurse told me I could go blind or have a limb amputated. I saw it as a challenge.

This is just as much a business story as a personal one. 30 years ago today my life changed when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. 8/17/94. It was a normal summer day, and I was at a basketball camp. But something was off.

I had this insatiable thirst, felt lethargic, kept running to the bathroom. My mom saw the red flags and asked a doctor to check me out. Minutes later, they were telling us to pack our bags and head to the hospital.

Diabetes was different back then. It almost felt like a death sentence as an eight year old. I had to take 8 shots a day, and carry a fanny pack around with this big gnarly glucose monitor and all of my supplies. Kids made fun of me. I had to go to the nurse's office every day before lunch, and anytime my readings were too low or too high.

I asked my mom "why did this happen to me" and cried at night about it. I just wanted to eat Halloween candy and be normal.

But over time, I got tougher. I saw my walks to the nurse's office as a free hall pass, and bragged about them. I joined the fundraising walks and went door to door telling my neighbors about it. I started getting really analytical and strategic about my meals and snacks and dosages. I went to diabetes camp and met other kids that were living a similar life. I tracked my average blood sugars and got competitive with myself about how good they could be.

Hard things that happen to us are a gift. We can resist change, cry and complain. Or we can accept change, and make the best of a new reality. So much of that is mindset.

I was so lucky to learn this at a young age. Today, Diabetes propels me to want to live the healthiest, longest life I can. And I'm determined to be a part of the cure.
