Enhancing Prestart Meetings: Tips from the Field
Effective prestart meetings are crucial for setting the tone and ensuring the day's operations run smoothly. Holding effective prestarts and public speaking may not be easy for everyone. On a recent site visit to our Hunter Power Project, I had the pleasure of witnessing our team execute one of the best prestarts I had been a part of. I asked our guys what they do to ensure our team members are ready to start work informed and well-prepared. Here’s what our project leads shared on how to maximize the impact of prestart meetings:
-
Engage Your Audience: It's not just about doing a prestart; it's about being the prestart. Use method acting techniques—embody the character who is delivering the message to keep the crew engaged.
-
Streamline the Flow: Avoid clutter by removing unnecessary attachments and focusing on key messages. This keeps the meeting efficient and relevant.
-
Leverage Technology: Consider setting up a WhatsApp group for site notices, allowing the crew to reference important information like TMPs and site maps as needed.
-
Interactive Discussions: Encourage crew participation by asking specific questions, like how tooling is working out or if any safety issues need attention. This not only surfaces potential problems but also fosters a collaborative environment.
-
Incorporate Humor and Humanity: When delivering a prestart, don’t just present information—bring it to life. Consider your prestart as a performance: embody the role, use humor, and don't hesitate to inject a bit of personality into the process. These elements make the meeting more engaging, helping the team start the day on a positive and attentive note.
-
Weekly Themes: Tie the prestart to the weekly toolbox topic to create a consistent safety theme. This helps reinforce key safety messages throughout the week.
A big shoutout to Daniel Thomas and Nick Hattingh for their prestart contributions and for leading by example. Your innovative approaches are making a real difference on site!
I’d love to hear any feedback on what’s hot and what’s not with your prestarts?
