I'm not gifted. Most of us aren't.

Growing up, I went to a neighbourhood school in Singapore. I had ordinary grades. I was average at sports and art.

Last week, Singapore's Prime Minister talked about the revamp of the country's Gifted Education Programme which is for the top 1% of students every year. The media has been looking for gifted individuals to interview in light of this announcement.

At Grow Public Relations, we thought this could be an opportunity to profile our clients.

When we asked our clients if they were part of the gifted program, many said "sorry im not smart enough." Have we become so aware of our standing academically that it has somewhat defined us?

Whats wrong with being mediocre anyway?

In recent times, many books have discussed mediocrity that I thought to share here:

📚 Being average can be liberating

📚 It's okay to be ordinary and that true fulfillment comes from accepting who we are rather than striving to be something we are not

📚 A slower, less ambitious approach to life can lead to greater happiness and fulfillment

📚 Consistent, average performance can lead to long-term success and stability, contrasting with the often unsustainable pursuit of excellence

How mediocre are you?

"All my friends can draw a nice square except me" 😢

If you have ever felt like giving up or felt like everyone is better than you..

this is for you.

My daughter was super frustrated last week

She was trying to draw a square and when it didn't turn out great..

she got super upset and said all her friends can draw squares except her. 🔲

My 3yo has started to compare herself with her peers 🤯

This made me think about..

our severe FOMO in the chase for grades.

FOMO = Fear of Missing Out

This scares me a lot as a parent.

My child is three and this is what I've noticed among my friends who are parents:

  • Signing up for numerous enrichment classes and tuition to gain an edge

  • Comparing children's academic performance with peers excessively

  • Fear of falling behind peers leading to excessive competition

Just as Im typing this, one of my friends texted me that I should start thinking about which primary school to send my daughter for.

I recently watched this CNA documentary titled Regardless of grades, why are Singaporeans so obsessed with PSLE.. 📚📚📚📚

The fear of lagging behind is real in our society..

Is it triggered by a red ocean strategy where one focuses on building advantages over the competition?

These conversations among parents always make me feel uneasy.. 😟

  1. Its not about trying to draw a nicer square than everyone but working on drawing the best square that you can ever draw through relentless practice

  2. Why are we even drawing squares? What about diamonds or circles?

In contrast to the red ocean strategy, the blue ocean strategy focuses on the pursuit of differentiation 🌊🌊🌊

..

Maybe, we simply thrive in a different context

The competition is irrelevant.

If you want to draw a nice square, you gotta start drawing one square everyday

I told her if you practise drawing 10 squares..

by the time u draw the 11th square, it would be much better by then ..

SWSWSWSW stands for “some will, some won't; so what—someone's waiting.” - I saw this quote on Jackson Lim slides and really liked it.

Some people are going to say yes, and some are going to say no. So what! Out there somewhere, someone is waiting for you and your ideas.
