And, a day-after reflection on PolicyLink Summit 2024...

I'd estimate that of the 2000+ terrific conference attendees, the vast majority were nonwhite and the majority [at least] were female. So, layering those two demographics on top of one another, I was one of a few white men, if not the only one altogether, in many rooms I was in. This was an unusual and tbh refreshing experience for me—usually, white men like me are everywhere.

It's wonderful that the event attracted so many nonwhite and female attendees. And, I can't help but believe that the movement for racial justice won't move as quickly as it could without white men contributing. It is a movement to create a better future for all of us and consequently all of us need to be ready to put in the work—including white men who historically have benefited from significant societal privilege.

To be clear, people who look like me should not be driving the agenda in racial justice. That said, there is an important role we can play by lending our voices, our power and our influence to amplify the efforts of others. I hope that when this group gathers again in DC in 2026, more white men will participate in the dialog in whatever way we can be helpful, and help these rooms look a little different. #equitysummit2024

We're excited to announce TrueVentures.org's investment in Evelynn Escobar and Hike Clerb Inc! Hike Clerb is a nonprofit that equips Black and Indigenous women, trans and other non-gender non-conforming people with the tools, education, resources, and experiences they need to heal through nature.

Hike Clerb centers those most underrepresented and marginalized in the outdoors. Through the pillars of Moving through Nature, Healing through Nature, and Restoration through Nature, participants learn how to access the outdoors, dial into the mental health and spiritual benefits of being in nature, and learn tangible land solutions to take care of the planet and themselves.

Evelynn speaks to her calling in a way that echoes what we've often seen in the True community over the past two decades: "I think it’s so important when starting any community to be married to your mission. Know exactly why you are investing your time into whatever you’re doing and who you’re speaking to. It should be a natural extension of you! When you’re operating from a place of authenticity, the community builds itself."

We're honored to support Evelynn's vision to create cultural, economic and psychological freedom for historically marginalized people who can heal together through the outdoors.
