In Q1, we have seen a lot of interesting things in the Nordic startup ecosystem. We're definitely seeing a market that is maturing and developing. And even though the market is still challenging and many VCs are holding back with their deployment and reserving for their own ones, we still see more and more positive signals in the markets.
But I promised you some kudos to the ones who mave "moved" our ecosystem in Q1. So, let’s get to it.
💰 Coolest (or most interesting) Investment There have been quite a lot of interesting investments: Monta, Reel and Fever, to mention some. But looking into the seed and pre-seed game, the investment made by BackingMinds Minds into CemVision really proves that VCs are moving into other sectors with “real money”. I think this is a pretty bold move and an interesting one for sure!
💹 VC that impressed me the most The launch of ‘Scaling through Chaos’ by Index Ventures is a pretty cool piece of content. It’s valuable, well written and thought-through. Looking closer to the Nordic borders, the ESG report by byFounders is also an interesting read and very well produced, - a great job by Sara and team!
🏭 Startup that has impressed me the most There are a couple to choose from in Q1; for example, I’m impressed with Monta's execution and success in raising funds. However, I must commend Flatpay - their go-to-market strategy is unparalleled and should serve as an inspiration for numerous startups. Their achievements are truly remarkable.
There could be other significant "market movers" in Q1, and don't hold back if you feel I missed some significants ones!

Predicting and forecasting means millions in NWC and earnings for even midsized fashion brands and when diving into the fashion industry's dynamics, one realizes the immense potential for a game-changer, based on how important the entire S&OP of the Fashion industry is, and how it’s done today. Therefore HAKIO could be one of the future large tech companies out of the Nordics.
🔎 Unfair advantage: The team have build a product over the last couple of years with the collaboration with some of the leading players in industry. This gives them a unique advantage in terms of understanding the problem, but also having access to some of the “best” data to build the product on. Which makes the product difficult to replicate (not impossible), both in terms of data, but also understanding workflows and change management at the customers.
🎯 Why Now: Since Covid the inventories has been booming for almost all fashion brands, the cost of having these as well as increasing penalties from different policies that has and will be implemented over the next couple of years, will drive an increasing factor into not overproducing but actually predicting how much you will sell where. I'm happy about this one and to become part of Malte & Simon and the rest of team Hakio's journey.
I truly believe they have the technology and team to significantly reshape the future of fashion planning. They offer the potential to save billions of euros lost to poor forecasting and transform businesses' operations for good.
