Is Buy Now, Pay Later a debt trap? Really engaging discussion with Susanne Krehl and Noah Leidinger on stage at last week's FinanceFWD Conference.
What was our surprising conclusion? BNPL being a debt trap seems to be an entirely media created hallucination. The facts tell an entirely different story:
- BNPL enables consumers and businesses to avoid so called negative working capital, i.e., paying goods before they have been delivered.
- BNPL is among the safest forms of credit, consumers and businesses can get, as no revolving lines are granted and credit assessments are performed for every new purchase.
- Leading BNPL providers have listened carefully to feedback from regulators and users with a clear commitment to highest transparency standards and lower late fees.
Thank you to everyone that attended, my co-speakers, as well as Caspar and John from Finance FWD, for having me.
