So all the better to have spent the last 24 hours with Lucien Mounier (Beazley) and Rachel Flynn (née Mc Keon) (Newline), the co-signees with Markel of a pooled D&O facility at Lloyd’s in Asia. An encouraging buzz at the Labuan International Insurance Council bilateral meeting with the Labuan FSA to boot.
Too many people “just fall into insurance” was a theme of my presentation on talent development and retention at the 11th Asia Insurance Brokers' Summit last week in Singapore. I believe we need to better articulate the colossal role of insurance in society. By doing so we will help attract the best talent to the industry. And in Asia, we need to focus more on nurturing local talent. It was a good opportunity to highlight two recent Markel initiatives in Asia. Firstly the launch of our graduate programme in Singapore, eligible for graduates of all disciplines (most people are surprised to discover my degree is in music). Secondly our two-way secondment programme between our Asia and London offices for high performing team members – a fantastic way of supporting individual development and perpetuating our collaborative culture at Markel.
