To celebrate Italic Type's second annual State of the Reader survey, I'm highlighting each of our six Deep Dives. Today we're on #️⃣3️⃣, How did we read in 2022❓

📖 🤳 🎧 Readers didn’t restrict themselves to a single book format in 2022. More than nine in ten read a mix of physical books, ebooks, and/or audiobooks. Why? Because different formats met different needs!

💕 Broadly speaking, respondents agreed that physical books were best for total immersion; e-books were ideal on-the-go; and audiobooks enabled “reading while” moments - for example, reading while cleaning, cooking, or walking the dog.

📶 Ebooks and audiobooks excelled on accessibility. Some respondents shared that they’re physically unable to hold a heavy hardcover for more than a few minutes, or that even large-prints have fonts too small to read. And several with ADHD praised audiobooks as freeing them up to read while puzzling or doodling, which aids focus. As one respondent put it, alternative formats “are life-savers. They’ve allowed me to keep being a reader.”

If you’re a book lover, I'd love to hear what resonates with you and what surprises you from this Deep Dive!

To celebrate Italic Type's second annual State of the Reader survey, I'm giving each Deep Dive its moment in the sun. Today we're on #️⃣2️⃣ Where did our books come from in 2022❓

📈 Most respondents said they had at least five unique sources for discovering books they wanted to read, and one-third said they had at least ten. Given that, it's no surprise that eight times as many respondents said prioritizing the books they wanted to read was a bigger challenge than discovering them in the first place!

🗨 Recommendations were the most common – and beloved! – form of book discovery. (Spoiler alert: recommendations from a real human continued to beat out those from an algorithm!) Browsing bookstore or library shelves was a close second.

📚 Speaking of bookstores, 74% of respondents who bought books in 2022 got some or all of them secondhand through IRL sources like thrift stores and digital ones like PangoBooks.

If you're a reader, would love to hear what resonates with you and what surprises you! https://lnkd.in/gaebDsR9
