I have so much more to learn about #sustainability even though I invested in several startups in sustainability though she1K C-shark Tank- FlyORO, SunGreenH2, KROSSLINKER Aerogel Solutions, Fortuna Cools, The Leaf Protein Company, Clearbot, I Am Grounded, Farmshelf, Re-Nuble, Thrilling Foods, GreenPod Labs

So I gathered men and women in sustainability last night at the 2nd First Mondays happy hour. The first one we spotlighted #womenintech .

What I love about these gatherings is people with common interest are meeting others for the first time and we make sure that everyone knows everyone. I spearheaded with 2 questions and everyone chimes in naturally, authentically with thoughtful insights.

When I studied the profiles of my guests, I surmised that sustainability roles seem to be rather stable. People do stay in their jobs for a while (maybe not too long) and it seems the layoffs are not affecting this department. Hence I asked the group if that were their case.

At #firstmondays, I like to close with asking "What is one thing you want or need help with?"

Love the spontaneity and best of all, I met Sidhant Gupta for the first time after we funded him in C-shark Tank Season 2, 4 years ago, who is visiting to participate in PIER71™ acceleration.

October 7th will be the next First Mondays and it will be for #HR #LearningandDevelopment folks.

+++++ I started First Mondays just because I do a lot of gatherings in New York every summer but rarely in Singapore. To push myself to do so, I dessinated every First Monday of the month to an interest / theme.

What is the first question you ask at networking?

"What do you do, (first name)?" is a highly common question we hear in Asia.

Have you noticed most people take a pause when they hear that question?

Is it a pause of "err....what do I do?" ?

Is it a pause of "what do you really want to know?" ?

Is it a pause of "hmmm....can I not answer that?" ?

Is it a pause of "in my culture...we don't ask this when we don't know each other." ?

How good are you at reading people's cues?

Is this a good question to start with?

Do your questions empower or cripple a response?

What is your real purpose in asking this question or any question?

Why should the question matter to you or to the other person you are meeting for the first time?

I believe in the power of insightful questions but that means you need to know why you are asking and why the other person should care about it.

What networking ice-breaking question or strategy has worked for you repeatedly?

++++ Join me in a deep dive session of EQ and asking POWERFUL QUESTIONS in diverse settings on a full Saturday along with 4 or 5 other peers in an intimate setting where we can develop our personal strategies and practise, practise. Only spots left for Sept 14 and Oct 5.
