Lab Head - Cancer Cell Plasticity, Garvan Institute of Medical Research; Managing Director - Kembi Therapeutics

Christine Chaffer is a prominent cancer researcher and the Managing Director of Kembi Therapeutics. She is an Associate Professor at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, where she heads the Cancer Cell Plasticity Lab.12 Chaffer completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne and conducted post-doctoral studies at the Whitehead Institute of Biomedical Research, MIT, with Professor Robert A Weinberg.1

Her research focuses on understanding the mechanisms driving human cancer development, progression, and metastasis, with a particular emphasis on breast cancer and cellular plasticity.12 Chaffer has made significant contributions to the field, challenging pre-established paradigms in cancer biology and publishing high-impact papers on cancer cell plasticity and tumor progression.1

As the founder and Managing Director of Kembi Therapeutics, Chaffer is involved in translating her research into potential therapeutic applications. The company holds US patents for seviteronel, a drug being investigated for its potential to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy in triple-negative breast cancer.34

Chaffer has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the Rebecca Wilson Fellowship in Breast Cancer Research and a Cancer Institute NSW Career Development Fellowship.1 She is currently leading a clinical trial to test a new combination therapy for aggressive breast cancer, which combines seviteronel with chemotherapy.4
