Christopher Dye

Professor of Epidemiology at University of Oxford

Christopher Dye is an eminent biologist, epidemiologist, and public health specialist. Born on April 15, 1956, he is currently Emeritus Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Oxford and formerly served as Director of Strategy at the World Health Organization (WHO).13

Dye's career spans over four decades, beginning with his training as a biologist and ecologist at the University of York (BA) and later earning his DPhil from the University of Oxford studying mosquitoes.12 His research has focused on the large-scale dynamics of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, malaria, Ebola, and Zika, often linked to field studies in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America.2

At WHO from 1996 to 2018, Dye held various positions, including Director of Strategy from 2014 to 2018.13 In this role, he served as a science advisor to the Director General, oversaw health information production and dissemination, and coordinated WHO's work on health and the Sustainable Development Goals.4

Dye is a Fellow of The Royal Society, the Royal Society of Biology, and the UK Academy of Medical Sciences.1 He has authored numerous publications, including books on tuberculosis population biology and investing in health and wellbeing.1

Currently, his research at Oxford focuses on the economic, environmental, social, and behavioral determinants of health, with a particular interest in how people value and make choices about staying healthy and preventing disease.35
