Exciting News 🚀

After almost 10 years, employing over 300 colleagues in 10 countries, €30M+ in funds raised and 1000s of customers served, Lengoo’s journey has come to an end… Well sort of…

https://lnkd.in/ebfDtSh5

Lengoo’s tech team and myself (alongside some of the technology and products we have built over the years) have joined Aleph Alpha to support its vision of sovereign human-centric AI for a better world. On the other side, Lengoo’s prof. services arm and many of our colleagues joined XTENSOS who has been our long-time back office provider ensuring uninterrupted support for Lengoo's customers.

To every Lengoolian who had joined us on our journey: We’ve been at the forefront of the AI revolution before many really thought about it. We went through many ups and downs, established together a culture where we achieved incredible milestones with very little resources while never forgetting to celebrate our successes. We built a product (and services around it) which did beat the incumbents’ solutions out there and will now live on under different umbrellas serving many more customers than we could have ever achieved alone. We should be very proud of that.

To Lengoo’s customers, partners, and everyone we've met along the way: It's been an honor to accompany you in your AI transformation journeys from the very beginning. Thank you for your trust and allowing us to learn about so many value-adding Gen AI use cases.

I couldn’t be more excited for this new chapter ahead of us. As VP Product, I will be leading our efforts to combine Aleph Alpha’s deep research background with Lengoo’s years long experience in customizing expert AI systems for enterprises to build category defining Gen AI products. I’m very happy and a bit proud that Lengoo’s former CTO, Ahmad Taie, Head of Engineering, Matheus Veleci dos Santos, Design Lead, Maria Camila Becerra Rodriguez and 20+ more incredibly talented Ex-Lengoo engineers, product mangers and UX/UI designers have joined me in supporting Aleph Alpha's mission.

Aleph Alpha’s focus on driving real and sustainable customer value with AI very much resonated with my personal and Lengoo’s belief in smaller, specialized LLMs customized for specific use cases making the most out of our customers’ proprietary data. Hence, I very much look forward to productizing all the research Aleph Alpha has been working on in the past years and together building the European Gen AI powerhouse our continent needs to secure our technological sovereignty.

If you want to continue our discussion around how to sustainably adopt Gen AI in the enterprise, you now know where to find me.

What a year it has been for AI! And what’s to come next?

2023 was the most exciting year since I joined the LLM space with Lengoo.  While it was hard work selling (custom) LLMs in the past,  the extremely well executed market education of open.ai all of a sudden made everybody want it.  From being invited as an AI expert by the German government to a closed session with all federal ministers to consulting over 200 enterprises in their AI strategy, 2023 culminated with us pitching at #NOAH right after AI heavy weights DeepL and AI21 Labs: https://lnkd.in/d6pn7wUW

But that was just the beginning. Here are my predictions for 2024:

1️⃣ Foundation models will commoditize The strong open-source movement has already shown in the past months that the output quality isn’t far off from closed models despite less computing resources for pre-training.  With all publicly available data scraped, the marginal benefit of increasing model size will diminish & open-source providers will shift towards competing on efficiency.  Multi-modality will counteract, but more efficient architectures & optimized hardware will overcompensate the requirement for more compute. The biggest entry barrier (access to compute) will fall away and commoditization is inevitable.

2️⃣ (Smaller) custom LLMs will be driving enterprise adoption Following the experimentation phase, high operating costs & threats of regulatory compliance were the main drivers to explore alternatives to closed foundation models in H2 2023.  In 2024, wide-scale adoption will make enterprises also focus on how to maintain a sustainable competitive AI edge i.e. how to “clone” their proprietary expert knowledge (existing data & internal expert feedback) in their own custom LLMs.  On the supplier side, full vertical tech stacks helping customers to make the most out of their data will emerge as the way to commercialize Gen AI. Delivering the highest degree of automation for specific use cases creates strong lockin effects allowing for high margins.

3️⃣ VCs will refocus from hype to actual value creation Following the application layer hype with fast growth rates, but indefensible business models & low retention rates, investors’ focused on foundation models in 2023. However, many VCs shied away from crazy valuations and feared commoditization. Most funding rounds were led by cloud providers who recoup these investments via cloud expenses. In 2024, investment decisions will boil down again to who drives the greatest, most sustainable customer value vs. generating hype.

4️⃣ Food for thought 2024 might reveal first cases of (custom) LLMs replacing seemingly untouchable SaaS businesses of the past decades. Agents executing tasks end-to-end will start freeing us from filling out text boxes in beautified databases. Ensembles of custom LLMs will form the new Enterprise Operating System.

I am very much looking forward to supporting the AI revolution with our products & services in 2024!
