Beating Impostor Syndrome: Insights from a Candid Conversation
About a month ago, I had a really good heart-to-heart chat during a mentoring session 👥. We met up, grabbed some Ramen 🍜, and spent a good 90 minutes talking about moving forward in our careers and wrestling with self-doubt.
I was talking to "Naruto", a UX design grad, who opened up about his battles with self-doubt and impostor syndrome 😔. Despite being committed to his work, he often found these feelings overwhelming.
I shared some advice with him: don't measure yourself against others 📏. Concentrate on what you want from your career 👨💼. Overthinking can hold you back, but thinking positively can help you move forward 🚀.
Naruto found our chat enlightening 💡. He shared his own experiences, I shared some of mine to help with perspective, and I reinforced the idea that there's a big difference between a dead-end job and a challenging one that aligns with your career goals 🎯.
I suggested that Naruto could try journaling 📒 or creating mind maps to figure out his next steps. I also recommended that he work on his portfolio and personal branding 👨🎨.
We wrapped up our chat with my offer to continue supporting Naruto in his journey 🤝. That wasn't going to change, but reminding him that I'm not going anywhere and that I'm rooting for him is what counts. That's the message I focus on when I mentor/teach.
UPDATE: His momentum has grown as he's working on reframing and boosting his storytelling in his portfolio and interview prep - and I couldn't be more proud 👏.
Key Takeaways: 1️⃣ Reach out for mentorship when you're dealing with career challenges 2️⃣ Keep your skills and portfolio up-to-date 3️⃣ Reflect on yourself to understand your career goals 4️⃣ Tackle self-doubt by focusing on your progress, not how you compare to others
Excelsior!!!!
P.S. Have you ever felt self-doubt or impostor syndrome in your career? How did you deal with it? I'd love to hear your thoughts below!
P.P.S. Like and repost ♻ if you're an anime or Naruto fan! 😁 🍃
