I had an opportunity to come across a very thoughtful essay from an IHI faculty member regarding the implementation of knowledge into practice and the responsibilities of physicians to resist egoist practices in favor of application true application of the scientific method in everyday patient care.

One particular quote that struck home:

"Medicine, Freidson has pointed out, is much more than a scholarly profession. It is a consulting profession. Our clients are patients, and we serve them only insofar as we use our knowledge to address their concerns. Put another way, society gives us no credit for scintillating discussions of our knowledge with our colleagues. We have professional value, and earn clinical autonomy, only when we competently apply what we know."

The domain of Quality Improvement Science meshes well with the real world translation of new medical knowledge, as I am learning, and provides an opportunity for physicians to continue to provide leadership in continually improving the Culture and reiterative Learning Systems necessary in the doctor-patient compact.
