My recent obsession with the Japanese philosophy "Kaizen (改善)" made me think of some other Japanese philosophies and concepts related to productivity and motivation. Sharing a few that continue to serve me for my LinkedIn friends:
#Kaizen (改善) That small, continuous changes each day will result in meaningful advancements and a big impact on the future. Even a 1% improvement from the day prior is meaningful, so break big, audacious goals into multiple smaller units and tackle them one by one, day by day. Kaizen as a company value invites teammates at all levels and in all roles to offer proactive improvements or changes to the status quo to simplify, eliminate waste, and set new standards.
Wabi-sabi (侘寂) The acceptance of transience and imperfection. The idea is that there is beauty in imperfection and that pushing against imperfect things can ruin their beauty or value, and waste time. (Anyone who knows me knows that I can struggle with this at times 😅) The concept of #wabisabi in the workplace challenges us to avoid overcomplication, release the quest for a perfect image to pursue authentic leadership, and value our teammates' idiosyncrasies and diversity, even if they don't fit neatly into the molds of traditional roles or scopes.
#Ikigai (生き甲斐) A reason for being; purpose. Ask yourself: what do you love? What are you good at? What does the world need from you? What can you be paid for? Five central pillars of ikigai are: starting small, releasing yourself, sustainability, the joy of little things, and living in the present. I've used this tool for wayfinding throughout my career and I keep my notes to see how my purpose has evolved over time.
Shinrin-Yoku (森林浴) "Forest bathing". #shinrinyoku emerged as a term in Japan in the 80's as an "eco-antidote to tech-boom burnout and to inspire residents to reconnect with and protect the country’s forests." Immersing yourself in the outdoors and consciously connecting with what's around you (leave that phone in the car!) relieves stress, reenergizes you for performance, and improves your health. Freddie the Corgi also appreciates this practice.
Have a great week, all! Almost to the weekend 🚀
