Highlights
Patient Throughput Just Got Personal First, the good news: my mom is okay. But our recent experience with her hospital stay opened my eyes to the issues and danger that I think face many patients today - throughput. Navvis recently launched a solution around throughput. I was excited to be a part of the launch and share facts like how we have helped health systems lower their LOS by almost 2 days…and then it got really personal. My mom came down with pneumonia and went to the hospital. The ED team did what they needed to do to stabilize her, but since there were no beds available, she had to be cared for in the ED for almost 2 days. The staff was awesome, but managing a patient with multiple chronic conditions, medications, and who was suffering from pneumonia was a big ask. Many things, like the details of her medications, were dropped, but luckily, after 2 days, they were able to find a bed in the hospital for her. She spent about 3 days more in the hospital and then was discharged with an oxygen tank. After being home for a few days, she was readmitted. She spent another 2 days in the ER because the pneumonia got worse. She finally got settled in a room, and after 2 days there, she learned that her roommate tested positive for COVID-19. For someone in her state, this was really unfortunate. It seemed logical to me that they would move her, but the issue now was that the hospital had no other place to put her! So now, throughput just got personal. My poor mom had to stay in an unsafe and potentially life-threatening situation longer than necessary (almost a day). I now translated the work we are doing not to just “lowering LOS by almost 2 days” but rather to ensure the safety of those we love the most. My mom was lucky. She has an advocate in my sister and myself, and we were able to connect with the hospital admin team. The admin team had to do all sorts of bed gymnastics to create a safer situation for her and we could not be more grateful, but unfortunately for other patients, the staff, and the hospital admin team this is their everyday and every situation cannot be fixed. Knowing that my mom was in danger was very hard on my family, but almost just as hard was talking to that care team who knew that keeping her in the room was not the right choice. I learned so much from the experts at Navvis about the things that most health systems miss when they are trying to solve this problem, particularly how most of them only look at things inside the hospital and not outside the hospital. There are so many things wrong in healthcare that are very complex and require a lot of time to solve, but THIS ISSUE is so fixable—with real results in short order. Before this week, I knew there was a need for the Navvis solution, but now, after my mom’s experience, I am even more passionate about fixing this (very solvable) problem…because #itspersonal.
We all have a personal story that drives the work we are doing in healthcare - what's yours?
