The SEC passed their Climate Disclosure Rule yesterday (March 6th), 2 years after it was initially proposed.

As soon as it landed and excluded Scope 3 emissions, we have been asked by many how this affects our customers' desire to chase gathering emissions from their suppliers. In short, it doesn't.

There are many other active regulations (with more being proposed each month), such as California's Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act, that are pushing companies to move now. California's regulation affects many businesses across the United States, as well as their suppliers, so the number of companies chasing Scope 3 visibility is still moving forward with unprecedented momentum.

There are also many other forces (such as a 9-16% cost reduction with sustainable supply chains & growing product market share 2x faster than competitors) pulling companies to act on sustainability initiatives regardless of regulation compelling them to do so. This is also why you have seen so many companies setting Science-Based Targets for reduction, many of which include Scope 3, prior to any of this regulation being announced.

Despite being disappointed that the SEC chose to exclude Scope 3 this go around, I still consider this a big win for the sustainability industry as a whole. Passing any sort of regulation at a federal level like this signals to companies everywhere that the need to measure, report, and reduce emissions is inevitable. Those that want to keep or gain a competitive edge are moving now, before it simply becomes the norm across the board.

As the co-founder of IN BOLD PRINT, I also can't help but see the decision to exclude Scope 3, due to its complexity, as further evidence of the need for a platform like ours. IN BOLD PRINT's platform unlocks Scope 3 carbon emissions data for large retailers and consumer goods companies with a long tail of small to midsize suppliers. Think of IN BOLD PRINT as the TurboTax of carbon accounting. The platform's simple, guided experience makes it easy for suppliers to measure, reduce, and report their carbon emissions data, without any prior experience needed.

Curious how this affects you? Feel free to send me a message, and I am happy to answer any questions.
