I spent a decade in the "Industry" as a model/actor before competing on The Amazing Race. In the early 2000s there weren't many roles casting people who looked like me. There also weren't many successful Actors that looked like me.
I was lucky that the casting directors and producers of The Amazing Race were disrupters in Hollywood, bringing in a diverse set of contestants with the desire to represent the audience that watched their shows. I loved watching Victor Jih & Tammy Jih Murray, then Kat win their seasons. It showed possibility for me and paved a path.
Once our season aired, it became apparent that two things were true:
- Millions of American viewers were desperate to see someone on TV that looked like them and
- Millions of Americans only saw my race, and attached a LOT of judgement to that
Before our season aired, we called Yul Kwon, the first Asian American winner of Survivor. He signaled that we might experience this duality and how important representation is, and he was right.

This year's film award season is really momentous for the Asian American community. Michelle Yeoh is the first ever Asian American Oscar winner for lead actress (only 2nd non-white woman in the 95 year history), and Ke Huy Quan finally recognized for his craft. And while this does not break through Hollywood's Bamboo Ceiling, there is a crack where light now shines through, showing the way for all of us who have a 'qualifier' attached to our Americanness, Asian American. One day, it might be possible for us to drop that qualifier and be seen as wholly "American."
