🌟 Embracing the Journey: From First-Gen Student to Convocation Speaker 🌟

Last Friday, I had the immense honor of delivering the convocation speech for the incoming class at my alma mater, Linfield University. Standing before students, parents, family, and friends, I was filled with pride as I shared my journey from twenty-three years ago.

As a first-generation college student who had only been in the US for five years when I started at Linfield, I faced numerous challenges with writing, speaking, and navigating cultural differences. The unwavering love and support from my parents, sister, family, and community carried me through, and for that, I am forever grateful. They helped me fall in love with all of me, including my beautiful accent that reminds me of my abuelitos and the place I come from. This journey of self-acceptance and resilience has been deeply intertwined with my desire to honor the sacrifices of my parents and grandparents.

Today, I stand here thanks to the encouragement of countless family, friends, and mentors - Thank you for believing in me! A few shoutouts to: Torben Stubkjaer Nielsen Bill Barr Mary Anne Harmer Karen Costello Lu Q. Duong Donna McCullough Corlinda Wooden, CCE, CCUFC Cathey Armillas Lou Radja Michelle Neal, MPA Steven Stapp Nina Byrd Shari Dunn Mireya Saldaña

I am deeply grateful to Debbie Harmon Ferry for the invitation to be the Convocation speaker, to Gerardo Ochoa for his motivation and support all of these years, Sonia Ticas for being an incredible professor and unwavering support, and to all the Linfield faculty and staff who cheered me on and shared their own first-gen stories. I felt truly loved, welcomed, supported, and celebrated.

Here’s a short excerpt from my speech – a special shoutout to my sister Yessica Manuel, who helped me craft it and listened to me practice it countless times. Love you lots!

"Attending Linfield took me through a transformative journey – which prepared me for the four paid internships I had at Fortune 500 companies every year in college. I graduated with a full-time job waiting for me at Xerox, and a year later, I bought a house for my parents to thank them for all of their sacrifices, love, and support that enabled me to soar like a Monarch butterfly. Don’t get me wrong, my college experience wasn't perfect—it was a beautifully imperfect journey that set me up to become one of the best in my field." 💜 Finding organizations that truly walk the talk can be challenging, especially when it involves overhauling major systems, products, and services. That’s why I’m incredibly grateful to be a tiny part of the groundbreaking movement led by some incredible Credit Unions nationwide to genuinely support the Hispanic/Latin@/Latine community.

These credit unions are actively listening to our community’s call for more resources and accountability as we strive to build generational wealth, secure our retirement, and achieve homeownership.

A massive thank you to all the passionate credit union leaders, community organizations, and industry partners who are wholeheartedly committing to this journey. Special thanks to Unitus Community Credit Union, Embold Credit Union, and Point West Credit Union, for hosting the Annual NW Juntos Avanzamos (“Together We Advance”) Roundtable event for the second year in a row, and for driving the industry to make a real impact where it’s needed most.

By bringing together credit union leaders from across the nation, along with vendors and local and community partners, they are creating inspiring spaces where innovative ideas are born, new partnerships are forged, and solutions to advance financial inclusion for Hispanic and immigrant communities are explored.

Your dedication and hard work are turning dreams into reality and paving the way for a brighter future.

A special shout-out to Inclusiv, NLCUP, and the unstoppable teams at Unitus Community Credit Union, Embold Credit Union, and Point West Credit Union . Your unwavering commitment is truly making a difference. I can’t wait to see and experience how much bigger this movement becomes next year!🌟
