Highlights
#opensource open formats become more and more important. Snowflake just released their new #Polaris catalog over #Iceberg, Databricks just announced the acquisition of Tabular, the main contributor to #Iceberg. Is there a better time to talk about the new capabilities unlocked such a git-for-data 😎 ?
In anticipation to our upcoming #SIGMOD presentation, check out this piece by Alex Merced, Jacopo Tagliabue and myself about the state of "git for data" over #Iceberg tables and discuss production use cases within the #Nessie ecosystem.
Bauplan is proud to be an early adopter of #Nessie and we thanks Dremio for hosting the piece.

🚀 🚀 🚀 We are absolutely thrilled to announce that we have a paper accepted at #VLDB2023 in Vancouver! 🚀 🚀 🚀 We will be there on the 28th of August to present our take on how build a #Serverless #Data #Lakehouse.
Thanks a lot to my wonderful co-authors: Jacopo Tagliabue Luca Bigon and to all the people we discussed these ides with Mattia Pavoni, Ryan Vilim, Simon Gelinas, Chang She, Wes McKinney, Chris White, Anu Sharma, Tyler Harter, rodric rabbah and Davis Treybig.
It’s a pretty cool idea: imagine you can have all the great things of the Data Lakehouse with the delightful experience of pure Serverless. On the one hand, all the things that enterprises like so much: separation of storage and compute, open formats, and centralized governance. On the other, something that takes user’s code and simply runs it super fast in the cloud without having to worry about any infra (no Spark/K8 clusters, no containers).
In the paper, we review user experience, high-level architecture and tooling decisions, and talk about how all of this can be done with manageable resources.
We have been thinking a lot in the past months about data engineering and infrastructure looking for new ways to make developers’ life 10x better. This will be our first VLDB, so if you’re into data transformation come tell us what you’re working on or drop us a line.
